Lighting The Way

Thank you Michael D. Davis for this guest post.

As you look at this image where do your eyes naturally gravitate to? If you’re like most people the pinpoint of light will draw your focus. It’s natural for the human eye to be drawn towards the brightest area in a photograph, especially if that light is small and focused. This image, taken on the Oregon Coast some time back, shows the fog moving in as the beam from a lone lighthouse shines through the darkness and mist, helping guide the way for ships navigating the rocky coastline. Boat pilots count on these guiding lights to lead them to safe harbors and keep them from perilous shallows off the coast. They provide a point of focus for the searching eyes of those who rely on them to provide safe passage. Imagine if these beacons of hope were in the wrong location or didn’t provide guidance when it was needed?

What is your point of focus, are you a guiding light to others, or perhaps both? Each of us is a point of focus and guiding light to others at some time in life. We often give guidance or serve as a beacon to others as they navigate the sometimes confusion and complexity of life. We’ve all experienced that beacon of hope in someone who has provided it to us when the mists and darkness of life have enveloped and overwhelmed us. Some people are acutely aware of this and strive to be a pinpoint focus of light, while others are completely unaware that they have shown the way to someone in need of guidance.

Developing our self-awareness, understanding, and appreciation of how we affect the well being of others around us will help determine how effective we become at helping guide others through life. We become a point of focus more often than we may realize or wish to admit. Our actions, demeanor, interaction and the impression we leave with those around us, good or bad, shapes the thinking and lives of each person we come in contact with. We are all the point of someone’s focus at some time. We alone determine whether we are going to be that beam of hope or a hindrance and false hope to those around us.                                                                                                                              – MDD
