Difficult Questions Don’t All Come From Children

“Why, why am I still here.” Her question to me was so simple, and her labored words told me just how much she wanted to be done here. But I had no definitive answer for her other than these difficult words.

At 87, no one more deserves freedom and peace than you. But I’m a believer- and so are you, in a higher power. And that power protects us and guides us. We are given a path, and it is our journey and ours alone, but it has a reason. In fact, it has many reasons. We don’t get to know what or why; we simply know that we need to follow it.

Along our journey, we find places where we are meant to be… People are there who need us or who are there to meet our needs. We share wisdom, love, support and we grow; all of us. Each person’s path is just a tiny speck of what makes up this whole world but each person’s contribution is critical. You, my dear friend, are still needed- your journey is not complete. And I don’t pretend to know why or what is in store for you or for you to bestow on the world, but there is undoubtedly something.

All I do know is that there is a plan and we have the ability to follow our paths because of the love and support of the people who have been gifted to us. And so we continue on faith and know that our faith and the love of our family and friends as well as the love of that higher power, will ensure that we reach the end of our journey where we are rewarded with the warmth and comfort of being taken home. It’s not a place that we find on our own but a gift we are given, one which we are guided to after we have finished our work here on earth. Just know that it will happen because you have faith.

This is as close to what is in my heart as I can put into words. I love you more than words can express- you are so dear to me and so much a central piece in my life but I understand and I ache for you to have what you want. I also must selfishly confess that I love having you here with me and I can’t imagine the world without you. But I know that day will come and I will wipe away my selfish tears and smile for YOU and your happiness and your joy in being home.

  1. I love how you said “we have the ability to follow our paths because of the love and support of the people who have been gifted to us”. This is so true. How could we go through life without the gift of friends, not just for how they love and support us, but because we have them to love and support in their lives. Your answer is gentle yet powerful. I think we all go through times when we wish we could just escape this world and go home to be with Jesus, but it must be a much stronger feeling when a person reaches that age, especially if they are sick or in pain. There is a purpose for every one of us, and we will remain on this earth until that purpose if complete. It is good to know that. It is comforting to realize there is a reason we are still here even if we have no idea what that reason is. One day we will know, and it will bring great joy. Thank you for sharing these beautiful thoughts.

    1. It is always good to believe that we have a purpose, even if we do not fully understand it. It gives meaning to life and a reason to get up each morning and see what the day hold for us and what we might hold for the others in our lives. Thank you, Diane, for sharing your thoughts. Your contribution and insight add great value to the post for other readers as well as myself!
