Be the Lighthouse

Everyone experiences trying times in his or her life. And on many of those occasions, human nature takes over, and we mentally utter what might be the oldest question in the history of mankind, “Why?” Sometimes, it is said in a truly puzzled tone and other times it is snarled in a voice demanding an instant answer, and an apology, from the universe. But in all of these cases, we feel that our predicament is not of our own doing. The lesson to be taken from these frustrating and even spirit-crushing moments is to focus on your ability to control the outcome even if you didn’t engineer the circumstances.

Think of a lighthouse, standing tall to warn others of potential danger and assist them in safe passage. That lighthouse is perched precariously on an outcropping of rock and forced to endure all the crashing waves and lashing wind, that nature can muster. But still, the lighthouse stands firm and continues to provide that warning to others, “Avoid this danger and remember, you are not alone…”

Applying this concept to our own lives not only focuses our attention on finding our own path forward but also motivates us to use our difficult experiences to help others. We are not dwelling on the challenge instead we are working on a solution, and offering assistance to others who might be struggling with the same hardship. Sometimes our warning is not heeded, but the point is to offer. All anyone can do is reach out to others, it is then the other person’s choice, and responsibility, to extend his or her hand to take ours.

Choosing to be that lighthouse is a defining moment for any person who is facing adversity. Not only is that person determined to move forward but he or she is also committed to using any shred of good that comes from a difficult lesson to help others in need. Facing a difficult challenge can create a feeling of isolation. But seeing the beacon from a lighthouse, or the outstretched hand of another person can provide the inspiration needed to overcome any challenge.
