I know a young man who is a warrior. But he has been concealing his true heart in the costume of a court jester. That statement is the most honest, apt description of how he has grown into the sum of his parents. His father has the heart of a lion. He is strong and bold. When someone he holds dear is challenged he is the most fierce being on the face of the earth. His innate understanding of right and wrong is the compass that guides his life. His son follows that same compass and carries that same burning ember in his heart. And yet it has taken years for the young man to understand his gift and master the abilities which must accompany it. For much of his early life, he followed his mother’s lead, relying on jokes or sarcasm as his shield. He watched as she let a sharp tongue hide feelings and emotions from all but a handful of her closest friends. He too kept his feelings and his heart in hiding until he found someone who would always protect them. Then slowly he grew far beyond the limited existence that his mother had shown him. He found strength and compassion in the love that he now shared. And with that love, he also discovered that his kind heart and his fierce loyalty were not a curse or a shortcoming to be hidden away but in fact, they are his greatest gift to be shared with those around him. He now speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves, protects those who are defenseless and loves with the passion and dedication of his father. He has become the next in a long line of honorable, compassionate and strong men.
What a gem of a story, especially on Thanksgiving Eve! Reading this makes me think of the Enneagram and how learning about it can help us become conscious of our God-given gifts, so we can bring them into better balance to share them authentically with the world. Each one of us is as unique as a snowflake, as common as grass, and being able to hold both of these truths in balance while expressing them through our thoughts, words and actions, is how I am coming to understand the gift of paradox.
Many of us invest years in discovering who we really are and how to best share our gifts with the world. But I have run across a few old souls who master this at a very young age. I marvel at those people and strive even more to understand and share my talents and gifts with others. We all have the ability to touch a soul and comfort a heart in pain. And as the holiday season begins, it is important to remember that could be the most important gift you give this year.
