An Aging Grace…A Guest Post By Amy Temple

We all reach the time in our lives when we realize we have gotten older…by that I mean, we are not the same as we were 10, 15 even 20 years ago.  Physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually.

And we HATE it!

We try to fight it every way we can. Plastic surgery and other cosmetic treatments.

We dye our hair if we notice it’s starting to go gray or white.

We dress and act a lot younger than we are so we can feel accepted as if getting older were a crime.

Well let me tell you…it IS not!

You have fine lines?  You have wrinkles?  Great!  That is meant to be a compliment!  It means you know how to live!

Your hair has turned gray or white?  That’s great, too!  Wonderful!

It’s not meant to be an insult when you begin to get gray or white in your hair, or when you begin to get wrinkles or fine lines.

It’s a rite of passage, my friends.  You are setting an example for our younger set.  You are a role model.

I have seen too many people in their 50’s and 60’s…and older acting far too immaturely.

There is no shame in being old.  It’s a blessing.

You should be thanking God He made you go this far.

You have so much to teach your younger generation.  So much!

So go do it!

I’ll be listening.

  1. Amy, this post from you, this incredibly timely message for me, is such a blessing and shows much wisdom and compassion for this human journey we are all on. I do feel a significant shift from our youth obsessed culture that has isolated so many older citizens and made them feel irrelevant and useless once they reach retirement. Messages like yours help to bring us back into better balance where we honor every stage of life as a time of learning, listening, loving and then, in our elder years, passing on the wisdom we’ve learned. Thank you so much for your weekly posts that I so greatly appreciate.

    1. Pam- I agree that this post delivers such an important message and in a manner that productive, helpful and kind. Amy certainly has a gift for tackling some very heavy topics but boiling them down to a message that we can all learn from and apply in our own lives. I always look forward to her poet and being fortunate enough to be able to share it with all of the readers here. See The Good would not be what it is today if it were not for Amy and her dedication and insight!
