Taking A Risk

Stress is a necessary evil for most of us. We all worry about things like job security, saving for a rainy day or retirement, and living up to what the boss expects of us. But when the worries and stress from your job become consuming, is it really worth it? Is it worth risking your current health and wellbeing for a future that you might never see? That is a real possibility if you can’t find a way to create a work-life balance in your present day life.

We all hear about those free spirits who just decide one day to quit a high paying job to devote time to volunteering or to work at a job they feel is more meaningful. And most people watching from a distance view that decision as one of huge risk. The person is deciding to risk his or her entire future by giving up what is perceived as the financial security of a high paying job. But sometimes, the greatest risk is actually staying at that high-stress job that is slowly draining the life out of you. Not only is the stress taking a mental toll but it also has the potential to cause very serious health issues.

In these cases, taking what feels like a crazy leap of faith to a job that you really enjoy is often the one thing that saves your life. If you are constantly feeling tired, underappreciated and as if you are never accomplishing anything in your career, take a long look at what is really important to you. It could be that you are on a path that was never meant to be a part of your journey. Consider doing something that makes you happy, gives you a feeling of accomplishment and allows you time to enjoy the life that you have built with the people who mean the most to you. While we all need to plan responsibly for the future, life is short. We should never wager our current health and happiness on a future that might never materialize.

  1. This wonderful post of yours today, Kathy, reminds me of the following quote by Joseph Campbell I first read in “A Joseph Campbell Companion: Reflections on the Art of Living by Diane K. Osbon, “We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” ― Joseph Campbell. A wise reminder for all of us, regardless of our age and life circumstances. By following our hearts and using our minds for intelligence, we will create happier lives for ourselves and a more peaceful, just and sustainable world for all life!
