A Labor Of Love

Happy Labor Day to readers in the States, and Happy Monday to readers who are starting their week in another country. In the U.S., we are taking this day to honor the American labor movement and all it has created in our nation. But I would also like to ask everyone around the world to take a few moments and think about what I consider to be the most essential Labor of Love in our society, parenting.

As September begins, we know that the end of 2019 will soon be upon us. Fall and winter are hectic for most people, and especially parents, as children are back in school and activities fill every waking hour. I know as a child, I was not good about appreciating all that my parents did for me or the sacrifices that they made so that my needs and wants were met. And I am reasonably sure that is a common theme for many of us.

So, this Labor Day, take a few minutes to appreciate all that your parents have done for you over the years. In most cases, their contribution to your life continued long after you became an adult yourself. I know there were many times when a surprise visit from my parents to drop off a bag of groceries and a box of diapers was nothing short of divine intervention.

And if you are one of the fortunate ones who can pick up the phone and call a parent today, take the opportunity to do so. Thank them for all that they have done for you over the years. Because anyone who is a parent will quickly tell you that though it can be a challenge to raise a child. But it is definitely a Labor of Love and one that is truly a treasure.

  1. We celebrate Labor Day here in Canada as well, Kathy. But to celebrate parenting can be done anywhere in the world. It is indeed a privilege and a hard job. I have never been a parent and can no longer access my own parents, but I can celebrate other parents around me and the love they have for their children. Happy Labor Day to you.

  2. You forget the fun you had growing up. I am sure your parents made you laugh too. Life was tough, but with lots of laughter too.
