Every Parent’s Worst Fear

As a parent, I can’t imagine my child facing a health issue that puts his life at risk. Even as the parent of an adult child, there is a neverending feeling of responsibility to fix or correct things. Knowing that this health issue is far beyond your ability to correct must fill a parent with an overwhelming sense of helplessness. And unfortunately, that is what a dear friend of my family faces on Monday.

Her adult son will be having another open-heart surgery. He has had many since birth, but each holds risks. And it is from thinking about this event, our friend and her son, I have been reminded of how fragile life really is. Each day is a blessing and opportunity to share time with loved ones and be thankful for all that we have becasue tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

This event also reinstills the understanding that we really have little control over so many significant moments in life other than to have faith.

Faith in the skill and knowledge of the medical staff. Faith in her son’s strength and the resiliency of his body. And most of all, faith in a higher being to guide this surgery to improve her son’s health.

So please join me in sending prayers and good thoughts for everyone involved in the surgery on Monday. Pray for the wisdom and skill of the medical team, strength for his entire family, and fast and complete recovery for him in the coming weeks.

  1. As a mother of two adult sons myself, I will be saying heartfelt prayers on Monday, December 13, 2021, for this dear young man for a positive outcome and a speedy and complete recovery following his successful surgery. You’re right, Kathy, once a mother always a mother. Another dear friend of mine shared the following with me several years ago and I’ve never forgotten it: Two things in life will never abandon you ; the all-seeing eye of God that beholds everything you do, and the heart of your mother that follows you always.
